Bounce and Baleadas Are This Week’s Best Bets

Did we feel a twinge of fall in the air? No. It’s just tropics season and the world just gets slightly cooler when it rains every single day. But still, we can dream after the brutal summer we had. Take advantage of the fact that it’s not offensively hot out and spend your evenings getting sweaty this week.

The 5.6.7.8’s with the Royal Pendletons and Guitar Lightnin’ Lee

Posted by Santos Bar on Monday, August 27, 2018

You probably only know one song from this Japanese garage-rock trio, but it’s a hell of a song. The rest of their discography holds up to their shining moment in Kill Bill, stacking up tons of tracks to help get a party movie whether or not an assassin hell-bent on revenge is listening.

Descendants with A Wilhelm Scream and Pears

Everyone who has even thought about picking up a skateboard has gone through a phase with these punk legends. They’re still going strong over 40 years after their founding. If they can get it together to play after all that time, you owe it to them to show up and lose your mind to “Suburban Home.”

Where: Joy Theater
When: Friday, September 14, 7 p.m.

Portugal, The Man with Chicano Batman

Posted by Hep Cat Entertainment on Thursday, June 14, 2018

“Portugal, the Man, chart-toppers” would have seemed inconceivable at the start of their career. Anyone who flailed arythmically to tracks like “Chicago” in the late ’00s would never know that the band had something like “Feel It Still” in them. But the band’s falsetto hook was undeniable and now they’re playing big rooms with LA psychedelic-pop weirdos Chicano Batman.

Where: The Sugar Mill
When: Friday, September 14, 8 p.m.

Nicky Da B Tribute

Nicky Da B was only 24 when he passed away in 2014, but he left a mark on the city that you would expect from an artist with much more time. The bounce star and innovator was pushing the genre in exciting new directions, nodding to electronic music as a move away from bounce’s hip-hop roots. Both the man and his try-anything spirit will be celebrated by a who’s who of DJs at Poor Boys this weekend. Expect sets from DJ Jubilee, Sissy Nobby, Hasizzle and Nicky’s own DJ Rusty Lazer.

Where: Poor Boys
When: Saturday, September 15. 9 p.m.
