This summer the opera will sponsor two beginner hat making classes offered at our scenic studio in Metairie. The classes will be taught by Jan Wutkowski one of the top milliners in the United States. Classes are limited to 10 and spaces are filling fast. There is a 10% discount if you take both classes. Big Brimmed Beauties - Sat & Sun, June 29th & 30th, 10-4pm Have you wondered how classic big-brimmed straw fashion hats are created? Come learn traditional hat making skills including: learning to measure your head for a comfortable fit, choosing crown styles that flatter the wearer, blocking high-end fashion straws over crown blocks, how to stiffen the straws, add millinery wire to the brim edge for stability and a way to ‘swoop' your brim beautifully, and then some embellishment tricks of the trade. Embellishments might include ribbon, silk flowers, vintage veiling/netting and even a few feather tricks (curling included). A perfect class for those wanting to begin the practice of millinery using time-honoured techniques. Straws are hand-woven and are a very high-grade. Some hand-sewing skills are recommended.
