Growing up in New Orleans, guitarist Davy Mooney had the opportunity to perform and study with many great musicians including Nicholas Payton, Wendell Brunious, Maurice Brown, Randy Brecker, Jason Marsalis, Christian Scott and John Boutte. He spent two years working in the city of his birth with the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute Septet. Some recent career highlights of his are: Mooney's new duo 7-string guitar CD with the great John Pizzarelli, "Last Train Home"; Mooney was featured as a member of the Brian Blade Fellowship at Lincoln Center and he just published a book about hurricane Katrina, "Local Heroes". His most recent album "Hope of Home" includes master drummer Brian Blade along with pianist Jon Cowherd and saxophonist John Ellis. Bill Milkowski of Jazz Times says of the record, "Mooney reveals his considerable fretboard prowess here, but it's always in the context of his harmonically sophisticated, literate tunes." Mooney returns home tonight from a teaching tenure at the University of North Texas to present his quartet.
