On October 22, join us for our Chefs’ Dinner Series Presented by René Fransen and Eddie Bonin featuring Chef Alex Harrell of Elysian Bar and Chef Joaquin Rodas of Bacchanal. The chefs of Bacchanal and Elysian Bar are bringing their backyard, winescentric, party vibes to this family-style dinner with wines curated by the Bacchanal team in the New Orleans Botanical Gardens’ recently opened Kitchen in the Garden. Chef Alex Harrell pairs his lifelong experience with seasonal and accessible products with his classical technical skills in the kitchen at Angeline. Hailing from southeastern Alabama, Harrell spent his childhood weekends on his grandparents’ Gulf Coast farm digging potatoes and picking fresh berries and figs to cook with his father. After earning his bachelor’s degree in science and biology, Harrell began working in a small, beachside seafood restaurant owned by a family friend. It was this position that inspired him to pursue a career as a chef.In 1998, Harrell moved to New Orleans and began working as a pantry chef at Bayona under Chef Susan Spicer. Under Spicer, Harrell acquired proper technical skills. In 2000, he began working for Chef Gerard Maras where he worked his way from lunch line cook at Gerard’s Downtown to sous chef at Ralph’s on the Park and Table One. He credits both chefs with inspiring him to continue studying proper technique, precision, and the value of fresh, available ingredients.When celebrated French Quarter bistro Sylvain opened in 2010, Harrell joined the team as head chef, serving thoughtful contemporary American fare. While at Sylvain, Harrell was praised for his simple, laid-back approach to food and was featured on CNN.com’s Eatocracy and Time.com. In 2014, Harrell announced his departure from Sylvain to open his own restaurant Angeline, which opened in March 2015. Angeline embodies Harrell’s simple, clean approach to Southern cooking.Born in El Salvador, Chef Joaquin Rodas grew up in Los Angeles and made New Orleans his home in 1995. He worked at Taqueria Corona for nine years before taking on a venture of his own. The Upstairs at Mimi’s, which serves tapas, proved to be a great success and one that began his love affair of pairing great wines with delicious rustic food with Mediterranean influences. Following his post-Katrina move to Chicago, Rodas returned to New Orleans in 2009. With his passion re-ignited by his work in Chicago and with inspiration from great New Orleans chefs, he made his way to Bacchanal. Bacchanal would provide the perfect culinary canvas for a wine centric menu. Each of Rodas’ dishes are created with the old-world wines of Bacchanal in mind and showcasing his love of food and his seasonal approach to embracing the old adage “what grows together goes together.”
