DNA Collective’s “Detroit Stories” Premiere at NOFF 2019

Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans

Indivisible NOLA joins Pont:Productions and the Detxnola Exchange Series in co-hosting the premiere of the Detroit Narrative Agency's DNA Shorts Series at the The 30th New Orleans Film Festival (NOFF) 2019 on Saturday, October 19th at 6:30pm in the Tubi Theater at the Contemporary Arts Center (CAC). This series of 5 film shorts by Detroit filmmakers entitled, "Detroit Stories," is an introduction to Detroit-based collective Detroit Narrative Agency's work; as the stories we tell about a place form a kind of DNA - shaping what that place is, and what it can become. Detroit and New Orleans have been sharing in very, very similar experiences and struggles over many decades, but in the most recent decade especially. For too long, the stories that circulate about Detroit (and New Orleans) have defined it as broken, violent, and in need of a saving from itself. In recent years, we see a new strand of stories about Detroit (and New Orleans): stories of resurgence led by White billionaires, scrappy entrepreneurs, and pioneering artists. Invisible from this narrative has been the Detroit (and New Orleans) that has been saving itself all along - the Detroit (and New Orleans) that has been pushing back against marginalization and erasure, the Detroit (and New Orleans) that has a vision for the future based in liberation and justice. The Detroit Narrative Agency is amplifying that Detroit; incubating honest, compelling, quality stories that will shift the dominant narratives about this place toward liberation and justice. DNA is presently crafting this work through a fellowship program that supports a cohort of Black and Brown filmmakers in Detroit to develop short films and accompanying community impact strategies. Likewise, Detroit and New Orleans are grappling with many of the same political challenges of the moment, as both cities power through the rebuilding of their spaces post-disaster, in what are largely advertised by developers and politicians as "blank slates" free for the taking, with erasable people and sustainable culture, in a neo-colonial landscape. We are at a powerful juncture with tremendous potential in New Orleans and Detroit right now. Our strategies could pave the way for the future. Please join us for the New Orleans premiere of the DNA "Detroit Stories" Shorts Series on October 19th, and stay for the post-screening Q&A with DNA's media-makers and shape-shifters! *** DNA "DETROIT STORIES" FEATURED FILM SHORTS: Dangerous Times | Rebellious Responses Director: Alicia M.
