Evan Christopher combines virtuosity, immaculate taste, and enthusiasm with a commitment to exploring the full range of possibilities in the New Orleans clarinet tradition. His highly personal brand of "contemporary, early jazz" strives to extend the legacies of early Creole clarinetists such as Sidney Bechet, Barney Bigard and Omer Simeon. Critics remarking on Christopher's dynamic expressiveness have coined his style "close-encounte r music" (NEW YORK TIMES) and have called his respect for the music traditions of New Orleans, "a triumph, joining the present seamlessly to a glorious past." (THE OBSERVER, UK). Tonight, he releases is latest recordings, "A Summer in Paris" and "The Bluebook of Storyville," live. Guitar and banjo virtuoso Don Vappie joins New Orleans-based clarinetist Evan Christopher to celebrate two band new recordings for one night at Snug Harbor. "A Summer in Paris" is Christopher's international collaboration with Romani guitarist Fapy Lafertin (Camille Productions, France), and "The Bluebook of Storyville" (LeJazzetal Records, UK) is a steamy showcase of Don Vappie's Creole stylings. Both Evan Christopher and Don Vappie are acclaimed internationally for dynamic yet reverent explorations of their respective instruments' heritage. Also featured for this special program of contemporary-traditional New Orleans music are Peter Harris on bass and Nahum Zdybel also on guitar.
