Neal "Sugar" Caine is a natural, a dynamic bass player with strong drive and an intuitive feel. By the age of twenty, he was preferred on the New Orleans scene by such notables as Ellis Marsalis, Donald Harrison Jr. and Nicholas Payton. He was then asked to join the Elvin Jones group, a position that he carried with distinction for four years. He's been a first pick by vocalists including Diana Krall, Betty Carter, and Harry Connick Jr. These days, he is mostly in New York City where he works with Wynton Marsalis, John Hicks, Billy Hart, and Oliver Lake, but is known for his work in the Harry Connick Jr. band for over a decade. Neal's debut recording as a bandleader is "Backstabber's Ball" on the Smalls label.
