Op-Ed Writing Workshop (sponsored by the Scholars Strategy Network)

Tulane University

The New Orleans Chapter of the Scholars Strategy Network, together with the SSN national office, invite you to a FREE Op-Ed Writing Workshop Monday, October 15, 2018 6-8pm. The workshop is inclusive of a light meal, and will be followed by social hour at Monkey Hill Bar nearby.
(we will provide one ticket to each attendee for a drink at Monkey Hill Bar). Meet the Editorial Page Editor of The Advocate Newspaper, Danny Heitman, who will share with you what he
is looking for as opinion editor at The Advocate, which types of op-eds stand out as particularly good (or bad) and why, and what works best as a high-quality op-ed from a scholar/academic. Danny will also be available to answer questions from workshop attendees. The remainder of the workshop will be conducted by
Dominik Doemer from the national Scholars Strategy Network office, who will be coming down from Cambridge to lead the workshop.
The SSN's OpEd workshop is a hands-on training for scholars who want to learn about writing for popular outlets. Attendees will gain an understanding of what makes an OpEd compelling, how to translate their research for a non-academic audience, how to think strategically about writing an OpEd, and the ins and outs of pitching. The workshop is great for all scholars, whether you've written OpEds before or are just starting to think about writing one. Come prepared with an idea for an OpEd and walk away with a plan for your piece! We will be happy to arrange for parking on Tulane or Loyola's campus for those who need it.
