Soak in the shade of Longue Vue’s live oak collection with a 3-day plein air workshop instructed by Artist-in-Residence Peg Usner. The class will set up easels under our mature Oak Alleé to create their paintings. Through instruction and demonstration, students will be guided to a finished work. Class supplies can be found at Mo’s Art Supply (New Orleans & Covington locations). This is a course for beginning or advanced oil painters who wish guidance in plein air painting. Suggestions, critiques and demonstrations will be offered throughout each session. Artists are asked to the bring oil painting supplies (list below). The students will be expected to have painting materials: easel, palette, oil paints, brushes, turpenoid and/or medium, paper towels and/or rags, suggested ¾” canvas size 11”x14” or 9”x12” but you can bring a few sizes to choose from. Art Alternatives, Fredrix (Medium Texture) or The Edge are good choices. Start with supplies you already have. Call Peg Usner with any questions about supplies. (985) 624-8557 Easel and Palette: Mine is a Coulter around $300 comes with the SLIK U8000 tripod is easy to set up and weighs 7lbs. Compared to the French Easel (at 13 lbs.) or most other outdoor painting set-ups, like a Pochade Box and tripod. (Mo’s has good choices in NOLA at Carrollton & Oak or in Covington on Columbia St.) If you have a set up …don’t buy a new one until you see if you like yours. Remember: KNOW how to set yours up before class! Oil paints: Winton (series 1) or Gamblin 180 The basics: Titanium White, Cadmium Red Deep (hue), Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Orange (hue), Cadmium Yellow (hue), French Ultramarine, Viridian (hue). Any extras you wish I sometimes use Indigo, Ochre, Raw Umber or Burnt Umber. Brushes: Bring your own or use Robert Simmons Signet or “Simply Simmons” Flats are best. Sizes: 10, 8, 6, 4. Have a couple of each or similar sizes Bring Amazing wipe off tool, or other pointed scraper, if you have one and a 2” cheap brush for staining canvas. Thinner/Medium: Turpenoid and Gamblin or walnut oil as medium plus containers: or other thinner/brush cleaner (preferably the odorless type) Other needed items: cardboard the size of your canvas, sun visor or hat, sunscreen, water, paper towels Nonmembers: $40/class or $100 for the series.
