Richard Wilson Drive Kenner, LA 70062 504-458-7556 REJOICE, Inc. 5th Juneteenth Unity 5K Levee Run/Walk and Community Festival Theme: Celebrating Freedom: Mind, Body, Spirit The date is June 19, 2021. The Run/Walk Registration begins at 6:30 AM and the Run/Walk begins at 7:30 AM. The first 50 registrants online will be free and may purchase the festival t-shirt for $15. Participants will receive a free T-shirt with the General $25 Registration. The 5th Juneteenth Community Festival begins with the Race Awards Ceremony at 9:00 AM. The Opening Ceremony for the Festival will include an introduction to the meaning of Juneteenth. The activities of the day will highlight Juneteenth History; entrepreneurial arts, crafts, and product vendors; food vendors; plants; COVID 19 vaccinations; empowerment mini-seminars addressing mental, physical, and financial wellness; a children’s area where they can learn African drum-making with African drummer, Westley Phillips, community resources tents throughout the park, etc. The Entertainers Stage will showcase New Orleans Finest: Charmaine Neville and Amasa Miller, Linda Wright, Zena Moses, Gina Brown, Vernon Ward, Brian Holmes, Bob the Pianist, and others. The festival ends at 5:00PM. All activities will be held at Kenner’s Rivertown Heritage Park. In 2003, the Louisiana Legislature made a statute recognizing the third Saturday in June as Juneteenth Day, the oldest African American holiday, throughout Louisiana. This national celebration brings together people of every ethnic group to celebrate freedom, reflect on our past and look with hope to a bright future. This year, Jefferson Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng, is slated to make a proclamation from Jefferson Parish at this event. Thus far, this event is co-sponsored by Councilman Gregory Carroll, Kenner City Council District 1 and Councilman Byron Lee, Jefferson Parish Council District 3. REJOICE, Inc. is the 501(c)(3) nonprofit community outreach of New Birth Cathedral of Glory Ministries serving families throughout Jefferson, Orleans, and the River Parishes assisting them to get on their feet and stay on their feet. These services by an all-volunteer staff include but are not limited to the following: providing school supplies, uniforms, and books for students' holiday and summer reading; skills development workshops; financial management classes; youth activities; services to our senior adults; book grants for college students; cultural enrichment opportunities; support for the students, faculty, and staff of Washington Elementary STEM School through our “We Care” Initiative; summer feeding program for youth-age 18; and serves as a COVID-19 Vaccinations Site in partnership with Ochsner Medical Center All proceeds will support the services of REJOICE, Inc.
