Dallas-based Reverend Frederick Douglass Haynes III, will serve as Dillard University’s keynote speaker for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Worship Service on Tuesday, January 21, at 7:00 p.m. in Lawless Chapel. This year, the service is co-sponsored by the New Orleans King Commission. The event is free and open to the public. Haynes graduated from Bishop College, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and the Graduate Theological Foundation. He also studied at Christ Church Oxford University in England. In 1983, the Reverend became the senior pastor at Friendship-West Baptist Church and under his leadership, the church adopted churches in Zimbabwe and South Africa. Friendship-West Baptist also adopted a Haitian village after the 2010 earthquake wrecked the Caribbean island. The church constructed wells to provide clean water for village members who were recovering from the natural disaster. Haynes’ dynamic character and commitment to service in Texas and abroad showcases why Dillard University President Dr. Walter Kimbrough endorses Haynes as an excellent choice for the 2020 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Worship Service speaker. “For the past few years we have tried to bring a prominent preacher to New Orleans to help the city honor Dr. King in a manner that befits his legacy here,” he said in a statement. “Most people don't know that the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) was founded here, so New Orleans is an important city in the Civil Rights Movement and the legacy of Dr. King. Dr. Freddy Haynes is a phenomenal preacher and if you have not heard him before, this is an opportunity not to be missed,” Dr. Kimbrough concluded. Haynes has hosted several radio shows, such as, Freddy Haynes Unscripted, Inspirational Vitamin on K104’s Skip Murphy Morning Show and currently broadcasts Praise Break for the Rickey Smiley Morning Show. He has authored two books, Healing Our Broken Village and Soul Fitness and was featured on Ebony Magazine’s Power 100 List of Influential African Americans. Haynes' latest book, Rockin' the World with Your Words: An Essential Guide to Developing and Delivering a Life Changing Message will be sold after the lecture.
