Please join us for a presentation and signing with Shane Bauer featuring his new book, AMERICAN PRISON: A Reporter's Undercover Journey into the Business of Punishment . The book expands upon Shane's groundbreaking cover story for Mother Jones , for which he went undercover as a corrections officer at a Louisiana private prison for four months, and interweaves the shameful history of for-profit prisons, beginning with their origins in the 19 th century, their rise in the 1980s with creation of the world's first private prison company, and bringing us to present day, when President Obama's Justice Department announced they would be phased out, followed by the Trump administration indicating it will expand their use.
