Sewing circles are gathering places for folks to meet and discuss politics. Historically, they functioned as a space to support political causes through the artistry of sewing. The Slave Rebellion Reenactment project will host a series of sewing circles and costume workshops as a way to spark conversation and community engagement around a reenactment of the largest armed rebellion of enslaved people in United States history. This free workshop is hosted by Antenna and ricRack Inc. will focus on beginning sewing machine skills, and reading patterns and open to all beginner sewers, seamstresses, and tailors, who want to help produce costumes the army of the enslaved would have worn in 1811 during the uprising. Because this will be done in a classroom-like structured setting, we ask all participants to register in advance and arrive on time. This is not a drop-in workshop...those will also be held at a later date. If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to use a sewing machine, this is the perfect opportunity! Seats are limited and first come first serve. Please arrive promptly at 12 pm for a complimentary lunch and a conversation about the project. Machines and Materials will be provided. The workshop will start promptly at 12:30 pm. RSVP on here. For further info contact Raven Crane, Slave Rebellion Reenactment Project Coordinator at raven@antenna.works or call Antenna Gallery at (504) 298-3161.
