Winemaker Peter Gönc was in the shop last week and I had the pleasure of tasting through the majority of his wines with him. Peter farms organically and takes a natural approach to his super small production wines. His family has been making wines for four generations with the first family vineyard was established in 1936. He has 15 hectares of hillsides vineyards surrounding the oldest town in Slovenia - Ptuj, home to some of the most prime vineyard land in Slovenia. The winery is an artisanal family endeavor, where respect for tradition in winemaking meets modern techniques. Wedged between Italy, Austria and Croatia, Slovenia is still one of those "under the radar" countries for most wine drinkers. Today, with more than 28,000 wineries, quality and variety abound, but most of the wines are still consumed domestically. So if you’re looking for distinctive, food-friendly wines made from unusual grapes by thoughtful winemakers in beautiful places for thousands of years - then Slovenia is your place. Very little of Peter's wines made it into our market and I was really excited to get a case or two of the 4 wines we will be showing. So if you attend you'll be some of the few in city to have access to these wines. We'll be showing his Kerner, Yellow Muscat, a skin feremted white blend and a Pinot Noir. If you'd like a little something to snack on with your wine, Casey Foote will select and present a pairing plate ($10 with flight, $15 without the flight). No standing in line for our Wednesday flights - you sit at a table, we come to you and pour tableside complete with lots of educational info on what you are drinking. The flight of 4 wines is $20 - reservations are highly recommended as we can only seat walk-ins if space allows. All wines and cheeses are available for purchase to have at Swirl or you can take them to go. Class Policies:-As with all of our tastings and classes we ask that you not wear perfume, cologne or any other strong scents that could interfere with the wine's aromas for you and those around you.-Refunds can be made with a minimum 3 days advance notice. Credit cannot be given towards future classes.
