Mid-City Street Car

Feline Secondlines and Beer Fests are our best free things to do this weekend

If you've ever wanted to parade for a dead cat or pet a llama, this weekend is here for you.

Here it is: the dreaded last weekend of the month. Paychecks dwindle. Rent looms. And yet your urge to have a good time is undiminished. Luckily, there’s always plenty of free, fun things happening in the city.

Pour Decisions

New Orleans’ biggest name in craft beer (pipe down, they were here first) is ending Louisiana Craft Beer Week with a blowout featuring jam band tributes and the Iko Allstars. Expect good times, great food from McClure’s BBQ and more than a few limited-edition brews.

Vox & The Hound (w/ The Night Janitor)

Vox & The Hound might have moved on from their Spaghetti Western-meets-surf rock sound, but their still a sight to see in their newest ’80s throwback form. Come see the new Vox inside the relatively new interior of Banks St. Bar.

Community Art Making

The standard image of the artist is one of solitude. Some impeccably dressed kid in a massive warehouse space flinging materials across a room all alone. But that’s largely bupkis. Art comes from interacting with people and the best way to get yourself making art is to put yourself in a space with other people doing the same. Whole Village is here to help with their free community art making workshops. Come early for the adults only sessions.

Entergy Cat Second Line

We’ve frequently said that New Orleans will throw a party for anything, but I don’t think people understand how serious we’re being until something like this comes along. This Saturday night, there’s a memorial second line for the cat that got into the Entergy substation and shorted the power to a huge chunk of the city on the 17th. Cat attire is encouraged.

We felt bad implying that there’s something wrong with kids up there. So here’s one for the whole fam damily. Mini-brunch empire Ruby Slipper is holding a fall festival outside their eggs benedict warehouse on Broad St. There will be bounce houses, face painting and farm animals. And you don’t have to be a kid to think that petting a llama is pretty dope.
