Water, water all around and not a drop to shred. That’s the unfortunate state that New Orleans finds itself in: surrounded on all sides by water, constantly threatened by the ocean but without a nice beach or the surfing culture that goes along with it.
However, that doesn’t mean any former beach rats in town have to let their gnar-built muscles turn to flab. There’s at least one gym in town that will let you pretend to have the smell of salt in your nostrils, no wetsuit required.
City Surf Fitness has created strength and conditioning classes built around carving and possibly even smacking the lip like “whapaa.” The intense workout uses weights and surfboard rigs to train all muscle groups and improve balance. The 35- and 50-minute sets are tiring, but the fitness chain points out that “nobody said surfing was easy!”
