With a new year comes new goals, and maybe you’ve decided 2020 is going to be the year you introduce a fitness routine into your life. Heavy gym equipment might not be your thing and you’re looking to give something else a try. Fitness instructor Corey Elbert has created a program to help you get into shape while having some fun along the way.

Elbert first felt the call to good health in 2015; he was training for fitness competitions when he fell in love with the regime. Soon after, a friend suggested that he try his hand at teaching some of his own classes. It seemed like quite the undertaking, but Elbert is no stranger to being self-motivated and keeping a busy schedule. In addition to being a personal trainer and teaching two classes a day, he has worked as an NOPD officer for 16 years.

“I’m always on the go,” he said. “It’s a balance, but I love it.”

Elbert’s program, Get Fit with Corey, is what he described as, “fitness made fun with real results.”

What Is Get Fit With Corey?

Elbert’s classes are aerobic-based step workouts that anyone can do, whether someone is new to working out or has been in the gym for years. Elbert prides himself on the fact that he has included a lot of himself into his workouts.

“I put my own personality into the classes, and people always come back because it’s fun!” he explained.

One of the things that makes Elbert’s classes stand out from other step classes is the use of a 360-degree circular board. Elbert wants his classes to be different from typical step classes, and that means keeping people interested and motivated.

“I always want my classes to be innovative and fresh,” he said. “People of all fitness levels, young and old, attend my classes. I try to promote a well-rounded class that everyone can enjoy. All people are welcome; my classes are mostly women, but there are men who enjoy the classes as well.”

On Saturday, Jan. 11, at 11:30 a.m., Very Local New Orleans and Get Fit with Corey will be hosting “Get It Ready!!! 360 Step Cardio Workout” at NOLA Event Spaces (1719 Toledano Street). When asked what people can expect from Saturday’s class, Elbert explained that the class will be a little slower, so newcomers will be able to ease into the routine. Fun music and lighting will add to the vibe of the class, and the combinations learned will build upon themselves over the course of an hour.

“By the end of the class, people are going to be surprised at what they learned. It’s fun, so you won’t even realize you’re working out,” Elbert promised.

What To Know

Elbert wants people to know fitness is available to all types of people and doesn’t discriminate. It takes work, but it’s work that pays off in many different ways.

“My goal is to dismiss the idea that fitness is just a physical thing; it’s about stress relief, too,” he said. “Once the physical is there, you still have to evolve and build motivation. Fitness is a lifestyle.”

Elbert has a passion for sharing fitness and health with others, something that is evident after talking to him for only a few minutes. He loves teaching and estimates that he taught over 400 classes in 2019. It’s his belief that a regular exercise regime can improve anyone’s life.

“Exercise and fitness gives you a boost of energy that you crave,” he says. “Once you get into the routine, it becomes a habit.”
