Will MechaGator make an appearance?
It’s never a great time to be broke. But if you had to pick a weekend to have no money, this would be the one. Parties celebrating anniversaries and the fact that we’re halfway to the city’s biggest parties are all coming up this weekend.
Check out a few of our favorite free events below.
Mid-Summer Mardi Gras
Krewe Of O.A.K. has been making Mardi Gras even skimpier for over 30 years. This year’s theme of “Hard Oak for your Tongue N Groove” is bound to bring out the raunch in all of this krewe’s amateur carpenters. The juvenile delinquent in you shouldn’t miss this Uptown parade.
Where: Parade begins at the Maple Leaf Bar.
When: Saturday, August 25. 7 p.m.
Ogden Museum 15th Anniversary Party
The Ogden is turning the big 1-5 and just because that’s not a real round number, that doesn’t mean we can’t party. All day Saturday, the art museum is hosting free workshops, bands, DJ sets and other activities that are sure to be a good time. We hear there’s some pretty dope stuff hanging on the walls in there, too.
Where: The Ogden Museum of Southern Art
When: Saturday, August 25, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Hollywood Thrift Sale
Okay. We realize we’re advertising a thrift sale here like we’re The Penny Pincher. What’s next, coupons? But this is no ordinary sale. This is a blowout of film industry props and costumes, opening up a way to get high-quality fabrics and outfits to people who don’t usually get the chance to see it without being members of Hollywood South. If your costume trunk could use a few new pieces, you need to go ahead and catch the ferry.
Where: 1005 Anson St.
When: August 25-26, 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Our favorite and only night of comedy and psychoanalysis returns to the Voodoo Lounge for August. Listen to a cast of a some of the best comics in the city do their tight five minutes only to have it all unraveled by not-quite psychologists.
Where: Voodoo Lounge
When: Friday, August 24, 9 p.m.
Free Wine Tasting
It’s free wine at the best wine bar in town. Don’t make us sell you on it.
Where: Bacchanal Wine
When: Saturday, August 25, 3 p.m to 5 p.m.
