The doldrums are done, y’all.
It’s getting to be that time of year again. You know, the time that we looked at earlier in the year and said “Yeah, it will be reasonably chilly by then” before booking our permits for an outdoor festival. It never turns out that way but for 300 years we’ve just kept right on hoping. That’s beautiful in its own way.
In other words, there’s a lot of fests, a few unmissable shows and one incredible drag revue to fill up your calendar this week. Let’s get to it.
Frankie Cosmos with Lomelda and Stef Chura
Tender indie-pop about feelings and crushes and stuff will never die, but you will. Don’t shuffle off this mortal coil without having seen Frankie Cosmos do her thing.

New Orleans Burlesque Festival
The 10th annual Burlesque Festival has more performers than you can shake a…well, use your imagination, at. Three full nights of every possible stripe of burlesque are coming to the town that does it best.

Some people think mid-September is a little early to be getting into the Halloween spirit. We have a word for those folks. It’s “wrong.” This festival celebrating all things gory, unsettling or downright spooky returns for its eighth year in the Prytania Theatre.

The drag scene is just as deep as the burlesque one in New Orleans. If you want political satire, improv troupes or out-and-out weirdness, this city has you covered. For those looking for a little nostalgia hit with their drag, this monthly show by Siren covering all things alternative from the ’90s. Look at these, their ruby red ruby lips.

National Fried Chicken Festival
Sometimes you wanna break away from Fiorella’s and see what else is out there. And this is definitely the chance to do that with 2 days of deep-fried festivities and entertainment.

Charli XCX’s Femmebot Fantasy
Chari XCX came to most folks ears via a world-dominating pop single. And she’s still got that spirit in a lot of her music, though she’s twisted it to stranger ends. The reliably interesting pop singer brings her Femmebot Fantasy party to New Orleans with the help of local drag queens and DJs like Garlic Junior and Bouffant Bouffant.
