Late-night eats: a guide to midnight munchies in New Orleans

So, it’s past 10 p.m. but your stomach just started growling.

It’s late and it’s been a long night. You’ve done some partying or maybe you’ve just done some working. Either way you slice it, it’s well after 10, you’re starving and you need something a little sturdier than Taco Bell to get you through. Because you’re in New Orleans, there are plenty of late-night food options from which to choose. Whether you have a hankering for breakfast or you could really go for some hummus right about now, here are a few spots that are sure to keep your hanger pains at bay.

The Camellia Grill

Price point: $4.99 to $12.99

The Camellia Grill is a New Orleans classic that serves up classic comfort food in an old school “lunch counter” type atmosphere. I love The Camellia because you can get a late-night breakfast here, and I’m a fan of any spot that allows me to get eggs, bacon, grits and hash browns for dinner (or for fourth meal). They also serve pork chops, chicken, omelettes, po’boys, sandwiches, waffles and much much more.

Sometimes after a night out on the town, you start craving sushi. I feel like we’ve all been there. I’ve said many times that New Orleans needs a 24-hour sushi place. Hoshun comes close with a full sushi menu as well as other Japanese and Chinese options served late. If raw fish isn’t your thing, they have Chinese classics such as kung pao beef, moo shu chicken, and fried rice or noodles to fill your stomach.

This is one of my favorite late spots. Not only have they been serving New Orleans for over 100 years, but the food is good and the atmosphere is divey. You can go in and get your breakfast (with extra crispy bacon) or a muffuletta served with a beer and/or a coffee, and no one will bat an eye. The eclectic menu also includes French toast, corned beef hash and gumbo. This is a great spot to have a nightcap and a snack before catching that Uber home.

I’m sorry, I think the fact that you can get a drink, get a bite and do your laundry, all in this famous bar is just downright charming. New Orleans is a nighttime city. Not all of us work 9 to 5 jobs, and sometimes it’s 3 a.m. and you realized you need to do your laundry and also, you could go for a burger. Igor’s has you covered. This no-frills spot will serve you a strong drink and a hot meal while you’re waiting on your underthings to finish the spin cycle. Also, be sure to treat yourself to one of Igor’s famous Bloody Mary’s.

Oh, yeah. That’s right, I’m going there. I’m putting F&M on the list because you know they are the best cheese fries you’ve ever had in your life. Sure, you were extremely drunk the last time you had them, but it’s time for a walk down memory lane. Remember those late nights when it got too crowded in there? Remember dancing on the pool table? Remember the cheap burgers and “deluxe” fries that came topped with jalapeños that you ate because someone else was buying? Of course you don’t, but, trust me, it was great. Hey, you might be a full-grown adult with bills to pay, but you can still relive those college days. Go ahead; it’ll taste delicious.

Frenchmen St. is the perfect place for a late-night Dat Dog because after all that drinking and dancing to local music, you’re going to need a little bit of grease to get you through the rest of the night. Melba’s is one of the reasons I love New Orleans. There is nowhere else in the world you could get a red beans and rice plate at literally any time of day. Not to mention it comes with corn bread and fries and any other side for $2. The menu also includes a shrimp platter, roast beef and rice, an assortment of po’ boys and more. Melba’s is gonna give you that home cooking before you head home.

You know that no list would be complete without including a Westbank favorite that satisfies your hunger late into the morning. The menu here is vast with offerings such as spinach and artichoke dip, meat pies, salads, burgers and wraps. My favorite here is the classic cheeseburger and it’s always cooked to perfection. If you need one last drink to finish off your evening, Vinnie’s has 35 beers on tap and even more in bottles.
