The Instagram craze around Drake’s ‘In My Feelings’ gets a muted reception in New Orleans

Most of the world can’t wait to jump on Instagram and show off at the slightest hint of a new dance challenge. Most of the world doesn’t hold a city-limit-spanning grudge about the idea of proper attribution and credit for its distinct sounds. Most of the world, as you already know, is not New Orleans.
While more than a few people were willing to hop on the #InMyFeelingsChallenge in the city, even more were vocally opposed to what they saw as another outsider racking up accolades and money off of the sound they helped create. Drake has a tendency to mine any and all scenes for anything he can turn into a hit. And he’s tapped the bounce vein before, as recently as two singles ago. When Big Freedia appeared as a disembodied voice in the “Nice For What” video, it sparked a conversation about credit that extended well outside of Freedia’s home. Even making the decision to shoot the “In My Feelings” video in New Orleans couldn’t force the city to put away its side-eye. So while there are a few people willing to take on the challenge in a straightforward way…

Plenty of other people rejected the idea entirely, saying that New Orleans already knows how to dance to its own music.
