Mardi Gras

Saturday’s early Uptown parades where highlighted by the Krewe of Freret with the theme “The Music of New Orleans” including a giant “Shorty Gras” float modeled after Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews.\

The Krewe of Freret included Krewe du Kanaval, a Haitian inspired collaboration between the band Arcade Fire and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Arcade Fire singer Régine Chassagne is the daughter of Haitian parents who emigrated from Haiti. She was joined by her husband Win Butler and fellow band members. Because “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere,” Jimmy Buffett also joined the Kanaval.

Timeless beauty and actress Angela Bassett joined Trombone Shorty on his float along with rappers Juvenile and Mannie Fresh.

Rap cabaret artist Suzannah Powell aka Boyfriend participated in the Krewe of Freret with a float featuring her alter ego and giant hair rollers in the parade on February 15, 2020 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Since there was no new episode of Saturday Night Live this week, SNL creator Lorne Michaels joined in the Kanaval. Hopefully things went more smoothly than the SNL special episode in New Orleans on February 20, 1977, when the Krewe of Bacchus parade was so delayed it never made it onto the live broadcast.

Rapper Mia X, who teaches hip-hop at Loyola University with the hashtag #ProfessorX, wore a brilliant white dress with portraits of inspiring women including Chef Leah Chase and Marie Laveau.

The Krewe of Pontchartrain started the early slate of parades with its theme “The Pontchartrain Blues,” and 400 riders on 18 floats including a Blue Man Group float.

The Krewe of Choctaw followed with the theme “Party Like It’s 1999.”
