PHOTOS: NOLA celebrates Joan of Arc’s birthday, 12th Night with parade

The parade marked St. Joan’s 608 birthday and 100th anniversary of her sainthood.

Zoe Kanga rides through the French Quarter portraying St. Joan of Arc, who defeated the English at the siege of Orleans, France as the Krewe de Jeanne d’Arc parades on Twelfth Night in New Orleans, the start of Carnival season, on January 6, 2020.

Twelfth Night is also Joan of Arc’s 608 birthday and 100th anniversary of her sainthood. Kanga was one of eight portraying Joan of Arc throughout her story from when she was visited by angels, to when she was tried and burned, and then beatified as saint. Margarita Bergen reigned as Queen Yolande of Aragon and artist Simon Hardeveld as King Charles VII of France. The people of France gave the golden bronze statue of Joan of Arc to the City of New Orleans in 1972 and it stands in the French Quarter. This statue is a copy of the 1880 Emmanuel Fremiet equestrian statue of Joan located at Place des Pyramides, Paris.
