There are teenagers in the city who have never known Charity Hospital as anything other than abandoned. The Louisiana State University-owned building has (somewhat controversially) sat empty since Hurricane Katrina, with the organization choosing to focus its money and building efforts on the nearby University Medical Center that opened in 2015. However, the big gray blight may finally see some use.

The Greater New Orleans Foundation is hosting the first of two public hearings on what’s been dubbed the “Spirit of Charity Innovation District” tonight (July 25) in the gymnasium of the Delgado School of Nursing at 450 S. Claiborne Ave. The meeting will start at 6 p.m.

At issue are three proposals from four developers for the empty 1.2 million square foot hospital. LSU is overseeing the plans for its long-vacant building and originally asked for proposals by July 30. However, that deadline has been pushed back to August 20. Both this meeting and another public meeting on August 10 will come before the proposals have been submitted.    An LSU spokesperson told NOLA.com that this new deadline would give the developers time to react to the public’s comments.
