One of the sweetest places in the city is closing its doors.

An announcement made Monday morning by Sucré’s board of managers read the confectionery would be closing after 13 years of business.

“Over the past year, our Executive team has operated in a responsible manner and has attempted to bring the company to financial profitability,” the statement said. “It is with profound sadness that we must notify you that we are closing effective Monday, June 17, 2019.

“Your support of our products has touched our hearts and we will be forever grateful that you allowed us to expand your love for finer pastries in our community with our macarons, chocolates, gelatos, cakes, and entremets”

The confectionary made a similar announcement on its website Monday to its customers, fans and supporters.

“Throughout the years, we have appreciated each of you,” the website said. “Your smiles and patronage have been priceless. Thank you for your business and your support. Know that the Sucre’ Family holds you dear. Stay Sweet!”

The site also indicated that Sucré will work out a solution for returns and orders that were placed.

“Sucre will work diligently to return payment for any order that has been placed on our website within the last 72 hours. These orders will not be processed and all funds will be returned to purchaser. We thank each of you once again.”

When Sucré opened in 2007, it was the first dessert-only restaurant in New Orleans. In its 13-year run, the sweet shop baked up three locations in New Orleans — one along Magazine Street, the French Quarter and inside Lakeside Shopping Center in Metairie.

In 2018, Sucre’s executive chef resigned from the company, but its CEO said that employees should take comfort in knowing that not “one” person can define the saccharine success.

“…Sucre has never been defined by one individual,” CEO Y. Hans Baumann said. “Sucre’s success, creativity, and efforts are credited to each and every one who has worked for Sucre over the past 12 years.”
