House Money: The Best Free Things To Do In New Orleans This Weekend

Get busy without going broke.

We know that the pressure to have a good time on the weekend can be compounded by a wallet that’s a wee bit lighter than you anticipated on Monday. That’s why we put out a guide to the best free entertainment options every weekend. Life’s too short to sit in your house and wait for the work week to start.

This week we have a little bit of laughter, a little bit of nature and a whole lot of dancing. Check out our favorite free events below:

A Battle of Wits

Posted by Paul Oswell on Friday, June 22, 2018

The International House of Puncakes returns, pitting New Orleans most quick-witted contestants against each other to see who can come up with the least groan-inducing turns of phrase. In between showdowns, some of the city’s finest stand-ups (Puneet Lakhmani, Marcus Bond and De De Theriot) will share less off-the-cuff material.

Where: Hi-Ho Lounge
When: Saturday, July 21, 8 p.m.

A Paddle (Just A Little Ways Out Of Town)

The bayous and wetlands around New Orleans are a glimpse into the ways in which the city under our feet was created. And yet too few of us city folk actually know anything about the waterways and ecosystems that birthed our home. The Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center in Thibodaux is a bit of a hike at about an hour outside of town but it will be worth it for a free adults-oriented paddle through Bayou Lafourche. The trek is guided by experts who will tell paddlers all they want to know about local wildlife and plants

Where: Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center, Thibodaux
When: Saturday July 21, 4-6 p.m.

Get some culture in your life and head to this gallery opening showcasing the work of Lisa Oliver and Garrett DeBell. Oliver’s vibrant mixed-media work and Debell’s stunning prints make it more than worth your while to trek to the Severio Gallery. But word on the street is there will also be cupcakes, if you’re into that kind of thing.

Where: Severio Gallery
When: Saturday, July 21 6 p.m.- 9 p.m.

C’mon & Dance

Posted by Bar Redux on Saturday, June 16, 2018

No matter what type of music you’re feeling, there’s a free dance night for you this weekend. Save that money for drinks to get you loose enough to think you can actually dance to cumbia selected by Malaria Sound Machine. If you can’t get the steps down, head on over to Funky Sole NOLA at the Hi-Ho for a mix of ’60s and ’70s slabs. If that’s not narrow enough for you, head to the ’70s-only night Xanadu at The Goat. There’s no excuse not to be stepping this weekend.
