circa 1980: American pop singer and songwriter Paul Simon performing in London, during a series of solo concerts with a backing band and chorus. During the previous four years he was involved in a film, 'One Trick Pony', which he wrote and starred in. He now lives with actress Carrie Fisher, whilst his eight year old son Harper lives nearby in New York with Paul's ex-wife Peggy. (Photo by Keystone/Getty Images)

This Is A Week Full Of Legends

Our 'Best Bets' this week feature quite a few names that you've heard before.

Decadence might be just about over but that doesn’t mean you get to relax. The first full week of September is loaded down with legacy artists making their last trip through town, big anniversaries for local institutions and opportunities to nerd out to art, punk or sci-fi.

Check out a few of our favorites below:

Paul Simon

Paul Simon is wrapping it up. This is his last tour. You literally will not get another chance to see the incredible songwriter on a stage in New Orleans. This is it, y’all.

Where: Smoothie King Center
When: Wednesday, September 5, 8 p.m.

EMPIRE Reception and talk from Bmike

https://www.facebook.com/NewcombArtMuseum/photos/gm.271571110093891/10156600078553024/?type=3&theater

EMPIRE is a site-specific work that covers the entirety of the Newcomb Art Museum, digesting what it means to be in a place for 300 years in honor of New Orleans’ tricentennial. Sometime after crowds started walking through the exhibit by Los Angeles’ Fallen Fruit, folks realized that you can’t have an exhibit covering three centuries of New Orleans’ people without seeing what Brandan “Bmike” Odums had to say.

The installation has recently added a piece called “The Alchemist” from the famed local artist and Newcomb is giving people a chance to see the new piece in place along with a talk from the artist himself.

Mod Dance Party Turns 18

https://www.facebook.com/ModDancePartyNewOrleans/photos/gm.268279157120250/2122465154473132/?type=3&theater

DJs Matty & Kristen have been around for so long that they have proteges. They’ve kept crowds sweating to the oldies long enough that they probably get that reference to one of the French Quarter’s favorite sons. If their Mod Dance Party was a person, it could go to war with other, lamer Saturday nights. It’s been around a while and you should be there to celebrate it.

Where: Saturn Bar
When: Saturday, September 8, 11 p.m.

Blunderland

We know from weird variety shows here in New Orleans. And Blunderland is one weird show. The Brooklyn stalwart is coming south with the help of Trixie Minx and bringing along a blend of “campy clowns…classic strip teas [and a] heartbreaking cabaret from an otherworldly wolf man.” It’s just $15 dollars. It’s just for one night. Don’t miss it.

Where: One Eyed Jacks
When: Saturday, September 8, 8 p.m.

It’s X. Yes, that X. Los Angeles’ X. Los Angeles X. They’re still at it. And they’re bringing it to One Eyed Jacks. Be there.

Where: One Eyed Jacks
When: Sunday, September 9, 9 p.m.

Star Wars – A New Hope In Concert

https://www.facebook.com/SaengerNOLA/photos/gm.2055888594729360/10156623106299515/?type=3&theater

There are plenty of people willing to talk your ear off about which versions of the first Star Wars movie are the best and the proper way to take them in. Not as many people are willing to tell you the best way to hear that classic score, but we’re here to say you should try and hear it in person. It’s a great reminder that John Williams is that dude.

Where: The Saenger Theatre
When: September 7-9
