What to do (virtually) this weekend: June 5-7

The stay-at-home order has been relaxed, but most of the fun can still be found online! Here are some of the events we’re most looking forward to in Virtual New Orleans this weekend:

FRIDAY, JUNE 5

Online Uplifting Uptown Flow Yoga | 6:30 p.m. | YouTube Live link will be sent out after Eventbrite registration | Donations accepted during Eventbrite registration

NOLA Tribe Yoga is providing one of the most beautiful opportunities to practice yoga in New Orleans. Every Friday at 7 a.m., they’ll lead a class for all levels set at the Audubon Park bandstand. Registration closes 20 minutes prior to class time so register now!

 

Meditation for the HEART | 10 a.m. | Facebook Live | Free

Heart N Hands is a great nonprofit focused on heart health and heart disease prevention, so definitely check them out. This week, they’re hosting a 15-minute evening meditation session with Stephanie Osborne of Meditate New Orleans.

 

Cardio Blast Live Stream | 10 a.m. | Zoom | Free

Join Footprints To Fitness for a free 60 minutes cardio workout in partnership with the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission. The class is designed for all levels so bring the whole family! Once on Zoom, enter the Meeting ID (334-196-3309) and password (BeFtiNOLA).

COVID-19 and Why Epidemiology Matters | 3 p.m. | Zoom | Register here

Hosted by the LSU School of Public Health, this is one in a series of lectures that show attendees what is possible with a degree in Public Health. This week, the renowned Dr. Susanne Straif-Bourgeois will speak about what her experience with the current pandemic has taught her about the importance of epidemiology and how she believes that will shape the future of Public Health. FREE Twerk Fitness Class | 9 a.m. | Zoom link will be provided once you register | Register here and first class is free

Want to learn how to twerk? Looking for a really fun fitness class? All classes are meant to be New Orleans-focused and feature local bounce, soca and afrobeats music. Classes are one-hour, take place every Saturday and Wednesday and your first class is free. All proceeds go to LowerNine.org. 

 

Fitness Fusion Class | 9:15 a.m. | Zoom link will be provided once you register | Register here and first class is free 

Like a gumbo pot, health and wellness company Footprints To Fitness created their master Fitness Fusion class to provide something for everyone… a true fusion of kickass workout with a whole lot of New Orleans culture. More than just a workout, it’s an experience! This class will be live streamed on Zoom. Register on their website to receive a custom link to join. The first class is free & registration is also available on ClassPass. 

Join The Journey for an all levels, high intensity combo class led by founder and media personality April Dupre, that combines yoga, pilates, strength training, weight training, cardio, and barre ALL IN ONE CLASS!

 

Virtual Cheers with Brieux Carré Brewing Company | Noon | Facebook Live | Free

Every Saturday at noon, the fine folks at Frenchmen Street’s Brieux Carré Brewing Company are hopping on Facebook Live for 30 minutes to host an online hangout. Drink a weekend beer, catch up with old friends and meet some new ones. The sessions are a blast.

Porch Fest: The Beatles | 4 p.m. | Facebook Live | Donations encouraged

Anais and Harry are back for another round of Saturday tunes. This week, they’ll be performing the music of The Beatles from the porch during an hour-long set.

Cowboy Mouth Full Band Livestream | 7:30 p.m. | YouTube | Free
One of the saddest parts of stay-at-home has been missing the performances of some of our most famous local musical acts. Cowboy Mouth is one of those acts, but not for long. On Friday night, they’re playing an hour-long set via their YouTube channel. 

 

Film Fest → Jeannette: The Childhood of Joan of Arc Movie-Length Heavy Metal Musical | 8 p.m. | Zoom | Free

Each Friday evening through June 19, the Joan of Arc Project (the group that puts on the Joan of Arc parade on Twelfth Night) is hosting a Zoom discussion group about a different Joan of Arc-focused movie. This week you’re invited to a discussion about a movie that is most likely the very first heavy metal musical (certain about Joan of Arc!). Learn how to watch the film here, then join the discussion on Friday with the Zoom link, above. Ellis Marsalis Tribute Night | 8 p.m. | Facebook | Free

Every week Snug Harbor hosts a tribute show to the recently departed New Orleans music legend, Ellis Marsalis, Jr. Swing by their Facebook page at approximately 8 p.m. and they’ll post the link to what’s become a very popular series of shows.

 

Love Tempo: A Distanced Dance Party! | 8 p.m. | Zoom (send organizers a message on Facebook for the link or check the page just before the party) | Donations accepted                                                                                                                                                         

Join the party via camera (or without camera if you want to keep it private) and dance or jam along to electronica, house and disco anthems. 

SUNDAY, JUNE 7

Big Freedia’s Kitchen: Gospel Sundays | 1 p.m. | Instagram Live and Facebook | Free to watch, but recipes are as low as $5/month

What does the Queen Diva cook? It turns out thousands of people want to know! Watch her chop it up in the kitchen every Sunday for gospel brunch. If you think it’s just cooking, you obviously don’t know Big Freedia. There’s music, dancing, cocktails and special guests, as well!

Join this call for a heartfelt discussion about race relations, respect and restoration with Pastor Fred Luter of Franklin Avenue Baptist Church, and Pastor Dennis Watson. Part of the discussion will be about how Christians from all racial and ethnic backgrounds can seek to better understand and affirm one another in order to build bridges with Christians and others from different backgrounds.
