#LunaFete2020 : In celebration of seven years of Luna Fete, seven pillars of light are seen on the Moonwalk in the French Quarter, Friday, December 18, 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic Luna Fete spread out its light displays across the city this year to avoid crowds and maintain social distancing.  According to the Luna Fete website the Skylights installation “honors the history of light festivals, created to combat feelings of isolation and loneliness in the dark winter months. . .light provides a source of hope in the and healing for the future. We encourage you to keep your head up and watch the darkness fade.” Other installations unique to the second weekend include the Chemin Du Bayou directed by Pamela Davis-Noland to celebrate Bayou Road in New Orleans with projections on the Southern Rep Theatre, the former St. Rose de Lima Church. The projection runs 6-10pm nightly through Dec 20th. A third project called Messages of Hope displays words on The Circle, at St. Charles and Howard Ave. “The artwork seeks to unify the New Orleans community with words that demonstrate the power of the human spirit, equity, and inclusion. The New Orleans Jazz Museum was lit green for #LIGHTITGREEN in support of Luna Fete as green is a color of hope and new beginnings. Many of the displays this year are visible along the Lafitte Greenway for the Supernova on the Greenway in conjunction with Luna Fete. In celebration of Saturnalia, the ancient festival of the winter solstice which embraces the carnivalesque, the Neighborhood Story Project is hosting an artist talk with their friend and collaborator, Akasha Rabut. Akasha’s book, Death, Magick, Abundance, takes readers into the midsts of the second lines of New Orleans. While many photographers in our city have concentrated on social and pleasure clubs, Akasha has stayed back with the crowd, appreciating the fashion, friendship, and sidewalk spectacles that are an essential part of the call and response of the parades. At a time when we are all missing chances to get together, this program will hopefully be a balm to see us into the new year.

See? There’s tons going on! If you can afford it, please be sure to tip the band/performers/DJ/teachers/etc. Many of them are battling lost gigs as a result of the pandemic, and are working very hard to keep us entertained during the unique times.

Remember, send me an email if you have an event you’d like me to add for next week’s round-up!
