What’s Happening in (virtual) New Orleans this weekend: Oct. 23-25

New Orleans is slowly opening back up, but there’s still plenty of fun to be had online until we’re 100%! Here are some of the events we’re most looking forward to in Virtual New Orleans this week:

Join Footprints To Fitness for a free 30-minute cardio workout in partnership with FitNOLA and the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission. The class is designed for all levels so bring the whole family!

When Women Won the Right to Vote: A History Unfinished | 11 a.m. | Zoom (link sent after registration) | Free
When women won passage of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920, they did not win the right to vote—despite repeated claims that they did. Just what, then, did the woman suffrage amendment do? Clarifying this history, historian Lisa Tetrault positions 1920 as the middle of a much larger story about the pursuit of voting rights, a struggle that is today unfinished and ongoing. Join the Louisiana endowment for the Humanities for a virtual lecture and discussion of the legacies of the Nineteenth Amendment in this centennial year of its passage.

Every Friday at 2 PM, the New Orleans Jazz Museum hosts virtual concerts with an exciting mix of talented Jazz musicians, all performing from their homes. This free online series, broadcasting to music fans around the world, highlights the rich culture and history of New Orleans. This week features Adam Weiner!

Welcome to HispaNola Live!, a weekly live music show presented by the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Economy – Embrace the Culture Series.  Every week you’ll get the best in live music entertainment all while highlighting some of the city’s most influential Latin culture bearers. Each week during the pandemic, the Garden District Book Shop has hosted a virtual happy hour featuring New Orleans authors and literary lovers. This week’s conversation is with Leigh Wright. Wright is an International Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, a stunt woman, a member of The Explorers Club , a producer, and writer. You can purchase her book, Local Life: New Orleans here. Join NOMA for a new series of virtual workshops that focuses on mindfulness, creativity, comfort and reflection. NOMA Reset programs provide a much-needed infusion of relaxation and wellness by engaging our collective and individual wellbeing. House of Blues has been hosting a thrice-weekly series of New Orleans-based musicians, and this Friday they’re presenting an hour-long set with The Fortifiers!

Live FitNOLA Class – Power Yoga | 10 a.m. | Zoom | Free
The New Orleans Recreation Development Commission is leading virtual exercise classes every day of the week (often two or three times a day). This Saturday morning, this 45-minute class is focused on power yoga, but classes throughout the week are all different. Check out a list of the full offerings here and here to find out when they’ll be leading classes in Zumba, pilates, yoga, fitness, line dancing, swing, hip hop, senior fitness and much more! Rosalie Botanicals near Bayou St. John says preventive medicine starts in the kitchen with healing herbs and foods. In this class, they’ll discuss the medicinal benefits of common culinary herbs many of which you (probably) have in your space rack. Participants will also explore the digestive system as the root of health and/or disease and ways in which to use food and herbs to help chronic and acute digestive issues. You’ll learn to make your own traditional fire cider!

The Jump Hounds swing band is bringing you a professional, dynamic live broadcast of hard-swinging jump and world class swing dancing. Intermission is also full of entertainment with a cocktail-making lesson!

The Broad Theater Hosts Virtual Cinema | All Day | Kino Marque | Purchase tickets (see below)
Broad Theater is open for business, but if you’re not ready to step into a theater just yet, they’re partnering with Kino Marquee, who is bringing you a rotating selection of movies directly to your home. There are multiple ways to stream the movie (which can be purchased at any time and watched for five days after the purchase). This week there are two selections and you can click on the following links to find out how to purchase tickets for Oliver Sacks: His Own Life, and Jazz on a Summer’s Day.
