What’s happening (virtually) this week: Apr. 13 – Apr. 17

As we move into our “new normal” for the next few weeks, we’re going to highlight some of the best virtual happenings! Here’s what we’re looking forward to this week:

MONDAY, APRIL 13

Mindfulness with Project Peaceful Warriors | 11:30 a.m. | Zoom | $10

Chelsea Hylton has taught more than 6,000 hours of yoga and trained more than 500 instructors. She and Project Peaceful Warrior want to ensure we’re taking time to prioritize our mental and physical health. Join her for an hour on Monday morning and let’s make this our healthiest quarantine week yet!

Join Alicia “Blue Eyes” Renee from her courtyard in the French Quarter as she displays her memorable vocals alongside Glen Finister Andrews (Preservation Hall Jazz Band), Jessie Smith (Cyril Nevil), and Sedric Holmes (The Buddy Bolden Film). The show starts at noon.

The Taproom Yoga that normally takes place at NOLA Brewing on Monday evenings has gone virtual. All skill levels are welcome to join Elevate Yoga at 5 p.m. on Facebook Live!

Virtual Nolalit Book Club | 6 p.m. | Zoom | Free

This monthly book club typically meets at The Columns Hotel. Given the current circumstances, however, this month they’ll be meeting on Zoom. The book they’ll be discussing is “New Orleans Griot: The Tom Dent Reader.” If this month doesn’t work for you, follow NOLALit on Facebook and get ready for next month’s book.

TUESDAY, APRIL 14

Rise and Vibe Live Yoga | 7 a.m. | Instagram Live Stream | Donations accepted via Venmo, Eventbrite and PayPal.

NOLA Tribe Yoga sees no reason why you can’t roll out of bed and roll out your yoga mat at the same time. Classes take place each Tuesday and are available on Instagram Live for 24 hours after the class is complete. Donations are encouraged.

Lilli Lewis “We Belong” Virtual Birthday Party Gig | Noon and 7 p.m. | Facebook | Donations accepted via Venmo and PayPal.

Local musician, Lilli Lewis is celebrating her birthday by sharing some of her favorite songs and stories with fans (old and new!) and friends. She’ll perform one set at noon, and another at 7 p.m. Tune in!

Cooking in Quarantine | 5 p.m. | Zoom | Register, and donations accepted here.

Cooking in Quarantine is an event organized by the New Orleans Culinary & Hospitality Institute (NOCHI) every Tuesday and Thursday at 5 p.m. It’s part-cooking class, part-supper club and part-office hours where New Orleanians can hang out with NOCHI chefs and one another to talk meal prep, family cooking, culinary techniques and more! This Tuesday, is a very special class. Chef Frank Brigsten will lead an intimate cooking lesson and 3-course feast for all in attendance! Check out the menu and details here.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 15

Groovy Kids Yoga | 3 p.m. | Facebook | Free

This 30-minute class is for kids and families, and has been a staple of Bayou Boogaloo since 2015. Enjoy it now from your own living room. No experience is necessary!

Debauchery! Online Edition | 7:30 p.m. | TBA | $10

New Orleans’ only live, ongoing soap opera is back! And this time the experience is going to be a virtual one. In this episode we’ll learn how each member of the family is dealing with self-quarantine. This month will include special guest star, A.J. Allegra. Purchase your ticket and you’ll receive an invitation to the show (which can be viewed any time until April 30th).

SideBar NOLA has live local music streaming for you seven nights a week (and oftentimes more than once per night). THURSDAY, APRIL 16

Guided Meditations | 1 p.m. | Skype | Donations accepted here

Tibetan House is offering 30-minute guided meditations via Skype on Thursdays beginning at 1 p.m. The practice is kid-friendly, as well, and beginners are welcome. 

Live bilingual book reading | 3 p.m. | Facebook | Free

Join The Pebbles Center at 3 p.m. for a live reading of books in Spanish from their children’s-focused collection. The books will share stories from Latin America, the Caribbean and the Latinx community in the United States. In this session, author and educator, Andrea Olatunji will share the latest top Spanish language picture books.

The Jake Landry Band is playing a recurring Thursday night gig in lieu of their normal set at the Foundation Room. Tune in for originals, a few covers and even some requests by you!

LPO’s own, Amelia Clingman will be performing Selections from Bach’s Six Cello Suites on her viola. You can RSVP for the event here, and tune in at 7:30 p.m. via Amelia’s Facebook page.

FRIDAY, APRIL 17

Zoom Pajama Party for a Cause! | 7 p.m. | Zoom | $20 suggested donation made here

Charitable organization, 2 Girls 1 Cause are hosting a fundraiser for Covenant House New Orleans, a nonprofit dedicated to providing shelter, programs and mental health services to homeless youth. This party will feature live performances from Big Sam’s Funky Nation and DJ El Camino. Find more information here, and a donation of any amount will get you the party invitation.

Mannie Fresh | 7 p.m. | Facebook | Free, but gift cards to support The Maison and its staff can be purchased here.

Famous local DJ, Mannie Fresh is hosts a popular DJ set called “Virus-Killaz” each Friday and Saturday night at 7 p.m. Check out his Facebook page for more information as the date gets closer.
