The best events for the week of August 27.
New Orleans is back to being its chaotic, too much all the time self. Maybe the city caught whiffs of Lil Wayne’s star-studded Lil Weezyana and decided to get on the same level, maybe it’s just snapping out of that heat-induced August stupor to fly into a September that we lie and say won’t be as hot.
Whatever it is, this week is absolutely packed with things that deserve to have your face at them. Check out a few of our favorites below.
Thou and MJ Guider
We already told you about these sludge titans dropping their new album in our concert roundup. But we can’t remember what we had for breakfast, so we’d never hold you to remembering the stuff that we say. Come out and hear the new tunes from Magus inside an interesting spot for a metal show (the posh outpost of Defend New Orleans).
Where: Defend New Orleans, 600 Carondalet St.
When: Friday, August 31. 6 p.m.
Journey and Def Leppard
Posted by Smoothie King Center on Monday, July 2, 2018
Yeah, it’s cheesy as hell. But have you been to a pool around here lately? It’s safe to say we like cheese. The living manifestation of the end of every ’80s night can’t not be a great time, right?
Where: Smoothie King Center
When: Monday, August 27. 7 p.m.
There’s simply too much happening this week and Decadence is that phenomenon in miniature. Every queer performer and party in town is pulling out all the stops for this annual bash. Your fave drag show will be better, your fave comedy show will be sharper and your fave party will be busier. That’s before we even get into out-of-towners like Cakes Da Killa and Horse Meat Disco coming to town. It’s gonna be wild, y’all. Try and catch what you can.
When: All weekend
The No Shows w/ Nick Name & The Valmonts, Trash Night
The photo for this event invites people to “come dance badly.” It’s definitely our type of party. Three stripes of punk converge on Central City’s tiki outpost for a night of sweet drinks and sweeter sounds.
Where: Portside Lounge
When: Friday, August 31. 9 p.m.
Think Less Hear More Presents: Akira
These masters of improvisation are taking on one of the strangest, most classic animated movies of all time. I can’t wait to see what the pulsing blob monster wrings out of their score-on-the-spot brains. Shouting “Tetsuo!” is probably not encouraged.
Where: Hi-Ho Lounge
When: Tuesday, August 28. 9 p.m.
Creep Cuts’ Final Show
Creep Cuts is more than just a drag show. Where other sets make you feel like you’ve been entertained, Ms. Aza Metric’s distorted cabaret leaves the viewer feeling like their brain has been blended up and allowed to leak out of their earholes.
Aza is skipping town for New York, but she’s putting on one final rendition of her funhouse-mirror drag experience in the Allways Theater. If you’ve never seen it, don’t miss it.
Where: Allways Lounge
When: Thursday, August 30, 8 p.m.
